Acanthocalycium violaceum, native to Argentina, is a globular cactus with many ribs and dense honey-colored spines. Usually solitary, can grow to 10" in height and 5" in diameter. Beautiful lilac flowers to 3" in diameter during late spring and summer. Closely related to Lobivias. Requires porous cactus soil and good airflow. Bright light to full sun. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Quite cold tolerant, but best to give frost protection to prevent scarring.
